Dr Michelle Vlok-Barnard
Dr Michelle Vlok-Barnard is a specialist psychiatrist based in Rondebosch, Cape Town.
Michelle obtained her medical degree cum laude at the University of Stellenbosch. She completed her specialist training at the University of Cape town, and achieved a distinction in her master's degree in Psychiatry. In 2018, she was the awarded the Novartis medal by the Fellowship of the College of Psychiatrists of South Africa.
Michelle has a special interest in mood and anxiety disorders, as well as trauma and stress-related disorders. She also has an interest in obsessive compulsive disorder and the management of burnout. She believes in holistic, individually tailored and evidence-based client care, with an emphasis on wellness and the building of resilience.
She works within a biopsychosocial model, taking physical, psychological and social symptoms into account.
Her psychotherapeutic interests include mindfulness, behavioural activation and cognitive behavioural therapy. Should it be required, she may liase with a network of top psychologists to deliver psychotherapy in accordance with her client’s individual needs.
Michelle strongly believes in empathically collaborating with clients in every part of the treatment process. This ensures a client-centred therapeutic environment within which decisions are made together.
